Some day in our lifetimes, far or near, there will come a moment in which great self-sacrifice is called for to save humanity. Yet in its time of peril humanity will cry out in vain. For all those who have a sense of Duty and Determination have not been taught to think critically and all those who have been taught to think critically have no sense of Duty or Determination. It will fall to those who cherish both to right the sinking ship. Thus will they avert History’s grievous judgment: ‘Too late.’ This is not a historical or political argument. Nor is it a nationalistic one. I feel this in my bones.
‘Who is in charge of the clattering train?
The axles creak and the couplings strain.
The pace is hot and the points are near.
And Sleep has deadened the driver’s ear.
And the signals flash through the night in vain
For Death is in charge of the clattering train.’
